There are actually very few ways that an appliance can be 'faulty'. It's just a lump of plastic after all.

If there was something like a big air bubble in the plastic (Which is very hard to do as it's processed in a vacuum) then it would have broken within 24 hours.

It's my guess she just bit a bit too hard on something. Retainers are quite different to braces - particularly the 'train track' type. And whilst both can be quite fragile if caught in the wrong way, what you can get away with on one could break the other.

I would just be grateful that the treatment has been done and practically finished before the change in requirements could have meant you'd be paying up to £2-3000 to get it all done privately.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • i thought i would post this here as there are a few dental questions.

i'm due to get a brace fitted (top set only) but have been offered an interview for a job the next day.

Will i be able to speak ok? it suits me as i have that day off my current job already so no need to lie about time off.

they sent me quite an informal email regarding the interview, would it be ok when i reply to say that i'm having a brace fitted the day before so please bear with me or should i just mention it on the day of the interview.

bit of a strange one i know!

All I can say is that my friend has one fitted a few weeks ago, (top and bottom) and she had a lot of mouth ulcers for a week afterwards and found it difficult to talk and eat. I am assuming it's a train track brace.

  • yep, it's a ceramic one rather than metal though.

i hate messing people about when it comes to interviews as i always think its best to show flexibility.

It can take a day or two to get used to a new brace.

The tongue soon adapts, and you may well be talking fine within a few hours, but it may feel as if you're talking funny for a few days.

I would mention it in the reply email, as it would lighten the mood a bit, and probably be a good ice breaker at the interview!!

The fact you're having a brace shows you care about your appearence, and you could easily turn that into a positive at the interview.

Ive had a brace and it does take a bit of getting used to, but if you mention it to them when you go to the interview they will appreciate that and may help you as if you make any slight mistakes in speaking etc they may sympathise a little but it shouldnt be too bad just make sure you tell them that you have just had it fitted the day before
  • I wore braces top and bottom and I could talk no problem, but it is true about the mouth ulcers the first few weeks.

I too would mention it in the e-mail. It will also show you are determined not to let anything put you off attending the interview. Good luck :D

When i had my braces top and bottom i got some like clear waxy stuff that you put on the square bits of the brace to stop it scratching your gums. You can't see it and it really did help until i got used to them. I did still get some ulcers but not too many. Sorry can't remember what it's called or where it came from as it was about 16 years ago. Sure your dentist will be able to help.

as others have said it'll hurt a bit and fell weird but you'll be able to talk ok and make sure you use the dental wax if there are any bits that catch and you will get mouth ulcers and probably find it uncomfortable to bite (soft food only - get used to soup and rice pudding for the first week or so) but it does calm down quickly and I could talk fine on the day it was fitted. It depends a bit what you're having done but I found it hard to eat the whole time I had it as my teeth had a long way to move and talking for long periods would mean it rubbed so the dental wax is really necessary just don't leave it in when you have hot drinks ;)
