    Really?

I have read that these surgeries are relatively safe and straight foward procedures these days.

That would probably come from a plastic surgeon!!

Just because operations are becoming more common, and maybe pain control is getting a bit better, doesn't mean that they are getting easier.

Osteotomies require breaking and repositioning one or both jaws.

Whilst the jaws reset, they need to be wired together for 3 months +.

It's like electing to have a bad car accident!

The surgery is only one part of the danger.

Can you imagine having your jaws wired together and picking up a tummy bug??

People have died because they couldn't find the wire cutters in time!

Osteotomies should not be undertaken lightly.

They are never done until patients are into their 20s though.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Sorry to overtake the thread but I just thought I would update Toothsmith.
I got back in touch with my ortho and he said that my braces can be taken off, so I am now brace free. :D
For some reason though, he said I don't need a retainer.

  • just showed my 11 year old daughter some of the stuff on the internet about her removeable braces and pictures of people with set back lower jaws etc and told her about the osteotomy operation.

She now says she agrees that it is better to wear them as much as she possibly can now, instead of wait til later, have to pay a fortune and a possible operation.

I can now see what the problem is with her not being able to speak while wearing them. She has developed a phobia of moving her tongue when wearing them, as it makes her 'gag', she will not put her tongue forward so can't pronounce any words properly, hence she stops communicating and takes them out when she is out with friends. I will just have to keep getting the message through to her, that only she can help herself. Not an easy job with one so young, she can only see what's happening today... not what might happen in years to come

That's because your brace has been acting as a retainer for the past few years!!!! It stopped actually moving the teeth about a month after you last saw the orthodontist!

I've got tooth ache and can't get in to see my dentist until next week :(

Strange thing is though its not one tooth that's hurting, it's all of my back teeth, top and bottom on the right hand side of my mouth! Strangest toothache I've ever had.

LM great news about getting your brace out btw :)

Thanks hun. I can smile without feeling self conscious now.lol. Apparently I look really different without my braces though and nobody is telling me if it's a good or bad difference.

Sorry to hear you're in pain hun. I'm no dentist but have you had your wisdom teeth through? That could be the problem. Might be doubtful though but you never know.

I'm 21 and don't have any signs of my wisdom teeth yet, thank goodness.

    Lol.

Oh, I hate those aches. It's really annoying, and makes me want to rip whatever part of my body is aching off.

Have you taken anything for it? It's a shame you can't see the dentist earlier. :(

I've been taking pain killers but as I already take quite a few for my leg/back problem I try to take as few "extras" as possible so haven't taken anything since lunch time. Think I might have to give in and take a couple more soon, trying to hang on as long as possible so it doesn't start hurting in the middle of the night and wake me up.

I could get an emergency appointment at the dental hospital, but that's miles and miles away and I have no way of getting there (don't have a car and FIL isn't well at the moment so he can't take me) just going to have to stick it out until next week. Clove oil here I come, if I ever work out which tooth is causing the problem lol :D (don't shout toothsmith, I know dentists hate that stuff but I'm in pain! )
