Avast antivirus

Avast Antivirus 4.7.1098 (VPS120531-1) is on but is reporting it's status to windows security centre in a format that is no longer supported.

Is there an updated free version of Avast?
I have automatic updates so don't understand why the format is no longer supported.

Appreciate any help.

You're still using version 4.

Avast has since gone through 3 major builds & is now on Version 7.

You may be able to do an "over the top" install, but I would be inclined to uninstall version 4 & then reinstall the newer version.

Can you tell me how I go about doing the uninstall.
Not at all techie I'm afraid.

Download the installer file for the newer version, but don't install it yet - save it somewhere you can find it easily (eg: the desktop)

Then just uninstall the old version via add/remove programs. Follow any prompts the uninstaller gives you and reboot - Then install the newer version by simply double clicking the installer file you previously downloaded and saved.

There's instructions here, along with instructions to use a special tool if you have problems doing it this way.
