I will be driving from Belfast to London via Stranraer this weekend and would love any recommendations of places to have a break other than service stations please.
I know there are lots of wee hidden places usually within a mile of motorway junctions, so would love to be pointed in the direction of a few please:D
Stop off at the Gretna Gateway shopping centre. Watch out for them speed cams on the A75.

Houghton Hall garden centre is about a mile from the motorway. The food is lovely in their cafe, there's an aquarium and play area for children, and there's a lovely farm shop. Also a model railway setup to look at and a "World in Miniature" museum (costs money).

I know you said no services but Tebay services are absolutely lovely. Locally owned and run.

Funny enough, Tebay were the only services I did stop in, in the end. Did go down the M6 but all the traffic jams were heading north, and I had a free run.
Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

I normally use the M6, it's alot better than it was years ago, and normally flows well enough nowadays.

Must have been some time ago. They've got a ton of roadworks from just after the M54 split down to past Spag Junction.

They've got roadworks everywhere, like the op said though, doesn't slow you up there more than anywhere else.

Tesco's in Carlisle, 2 minutes off the motorway and about 2 1/2 to 3 hours from the ferry, good position for first rest stop.

Cafe and fuel much cheaper than services, as you would expect.

Also next door to Tesco there is a Toby Cavery
