I have been temping since early 2012 (hurrah!), after way too long out of work..
My current tax code is 747L, and combined wages/JSA for last tax year comes to about £5,500 -
i make that c.£2,000 under the threshold - do i get that all back, or the taxable equivalent (say 20% - £500 ?)
The lovely tax folks want a letter to confirm amounts from JSA, before they look at it.. (HMRC claim not to have received any info from jobcentre.. though v helpful woman I spoke to there didnt believe it either!)
added note-
Was asking as in a previous year, i got a rebate automatically, about 3 weeks after starting work..

how much tax have you actually paid? you can check your pay slips
If you have been deducted tax then you will be able to claim that amount back. If you were not deducted tax then there will be nothing to claim back0 -
as above you cant claim back something you havent paid, thats not how tax allowances work (except in greece)0

Hi I applied for a tax rebate last year as I only worked 4 month in the tx yr due to being pregnant and moving areas. The way PAYE is calculated is. Your personal allowance is dividend by 12 (or 52 if paid weekly) so 7475 / 12 = 622.91 so this is the amount you earn per month before tax. If however you only happened to work say 6 months out of 12 PAYE will not divide your 7475 by 6 so you will be getting tXed as if you have worked the whole yr. Easist thing is to get your p60 plus any p45,s from other jobs or jsa add your total wages andjsa if it comes to under 7475 you can claim back all tax paid. If it isover 7475 you may still be able to claim some back. I claimed 720 back last tx yr they were pretty fast to pay me too.0

JSA P45s often do not make it onto tax records, so it is usual to be asked to provide JSA details to enable a tax calculation/refund. Unfortunately the 2 departments are very separate and do not have much knowledge of each other's roles0
