Higher mileage - Lower premium!!!!

Just been to the Sainsbury's insurance site to get a quote for my car and found that by putting my annual milage down as 6000-7000 increased my premium by £10 from that quoted for 7000 - 8000 miles.
I always assumed that lower milage = lower premium, but I was wrong......

Higher mileage can also mean that you are a more experienced driver and so therefore a safer risk too.

If you were to plot mileage against premium you would get a U shaped cerve. As iceicebaby says, if you are doing very low mileage you may lack the experience that someone who does much higher mileage has. Once you get to high mileage you dont gain significantly from the extra experience but simply increase the risk of you being in an accident so premiums go up again. Unfortunately where the base of the U is will vary between different insurers.

  • Hi, am just about to take my test and when looking for insurance always put mileage as 2000, if I put down a bit more instead and got a lower premium but then had to claim on it, would they check my mileage an would it count?

You shouldn't deliberately under- or over-state your mileage as it is fraudulent to do so. You should always give your best estimate irrespective of the impact that has on your premium.
