Roofing help plse

I've just had some work done on my roof. As my house was built in the 20s there is no felt under the slate. They recommended that I have some put in, which will presumably mean stripping the roof. The roof has been patched pretty badly with strange composite tiles rather than Welsh slates so it's something we may consider doing in the future. I just wondered if it makes sense to pay the extra to do this rather than patch again with the proper tiles? What does the felt actually do? Is it just for insulation?
Thanks
Thanks

might as well strip it off and reroof it with composite slate/tiles and felt.
the felt is for extra weather protection. it doesnt add that much to the insulation.
ps.
real welsh slate is very expensive now.Get some gorm.0 -

Thanks Ormus but the house footprint is T shaped & the front (top of T) & the long bit are both fine, it's only the back of the front bit ie the two little bits that join with the long bit (does that make sense??!
) that has the dodgy tiles & flashing. So I have to use Welsh slate on that to match the rest of the roof.
The good thing is that it sounds as if (as long as the roof is in good repair) not having felt shouldn't make a huge differance to anything.0 -
I have an old house with no felt under the slates. Recently I had a roofer look at it and he said it was fine "good for another 10 years" so not to re-roof it. I think as long as you keep a check on the roof and keep it maintained I dont think there is a problem"The time is always right to do what is right"0

Head roofer had a detailed look at it today. Although he did lots of tutting at the quality of the patching (wrong tiles & stuck on with mastic! ) he said to just keep an eye on those incase they slipped, otherwise the rest should be ok & no reason to touch them until there's a problem.
