Can't grumble for that money, they're not a dreadful car when they work.

Drive it until it blows it's gasket again, or you've had enough of it, then weigh it in.

    Ignore the naysayers.

I bought a rover for £500 with a years MOT in February- I admit it doesn't have the dreaded K series engine (I had a 214si back in '94 and yes the HG did blow) and I would agree for £500 I would go for it with this one described. It's worth at least £160 in scrap as well so you could get a years motoring for £340.

I wish people would read posts properly... Never said the engne was built by BMW, said it sits on A PLATFORM, or chassis if you wish... :)

Anyway, still a decent enough car for £450

Although BMW owned Rover when the 200 was introduced in late 1995, design on the car was started in 1990 and the main structure was signed off well before BMW purchased the company. BMW's involvement was limited to things like increasing the amount of chrome, and calling it the 200 instead of 100 in an effort to push it upmarket

I did read your post correctly, it was simply not correct, BMW were not involved in the design of the engine or chassis.

Just because the gasket has been replaced does not mean it will not fail again! The car also has quite a low mileage which can mean it is worse condition than one that has done the average 10K a year - it indicates lots of short journeys. On the other hand its cheap with a years MOT.

I would search for something different, the worst thing you can do is rush in and buy the first half decent'ish car

If the head gasket was done properly then it should be fine. One of the major contributing factors in head gasket failure was Rover's use of plastic/nylon dowels to position the head. These failed causing HGF.

The replacement head gasket kit would have come with replacement metal dowels so it should be fine.

The OP could search for something different but if you know this car's history then that counts for a lot.

My family have a 1996 Rover 25 that is used as a workhorse and spare car. The whole family use it to fetch and carry stuff and make trips to the dump in. It was kept because there's absolutely nothing wrong with it and the trade in offered was a joke. It's handy to have.

The so called piece of cr*p starts first time every time and is the car used when so called better cars break down. Every year it goes through another MOT, this year it passed without any work, last year it had a couple of suspension bushes.

In the winter two of the girls fight over it as they both have a BMW Z4 that is rubbish in the snow.

I use it too when I can as my Merc SLK 32 AMG is also rubbish in the snow.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.
