Preparing floors to sand

Hi, I'm looking to get my hallway floors sanded as I discovered lately that they are in great condition. I noticed when I pulled the carpet back it was as if the last people had glued the underlay down and it's kind of semi-sticking in places. No, I don't think it will sand down well so I am wondering what's the best way to tackle it. I'm guessing some kind of white spirit (?) idea to melt the adhesive then hiring a sander. Does that sound about right?
PS I am pretty rubbish at DIY so if you can help please do it as if you were talking to an alien!

I think you'd be surprised at what sands, so long as its not metal ie screws or nails it will come off but you may go through more sanding belts as they can be gummed up.0

Thanks for that. I had another look this afternoon and they may not be as sticky as I was thinking, they look in fantastic shape. Might just wait to the other half is out at golf tonight and tear the carpets up :-)0
