Yes I fully agree - and I don't think they quite appreciate how much our usual troll differs from those on other boards, nor how single minded and commercially self-interested their purpose is.

Oh, I think they do. I'm more than happy to help them to help us help others.

Problem with putting this up front is that the trolls may take this as being ok to wind up the normal posters in the hope of getting them banned.

They do that anyway, whether by accident or design. Just don't rise to the bait. Yes, I know, do as I say, not as I do. Or did. Or click on their username and really ignore them.

Going "ignore" is the forum equivalent of burying head in sand. The report and get rid of them is not for our benefit.

It is for the benefit of the newbies that the troll aims the comments at.

None of the regulars are going to be fooled.

What we did on another forum I used (nothing to do with PPCs) was when one poster kept joining under different names, we did something very simple, it's not offensive and stopped them posting.

We just found an entirely random, and completely unrelated image on Google searches, something like this:

    affirm_random.jpg

(This is what I got from typing "random image" in to Google, it's suprisingly apt though.....)

Everybody just replies with the image, nothing else... Zilch, nada, just pages and pages of everything they write being replied to with a random image, I can tell you this is an exercise in frustration for the poster, they tend to realise people are not going to enter in to any discussion.

People get the satisfaction of posting something to annoy them back, but nothing that can cause offence, doesn't start flame wars (poster doesn't tend to bother if they know the only response they'll get is a picture of a mains plug or something......)

Then if we pick an image on settle on it, maybe we could start sending them in the post to the rotund man..... Without a stamp, of course.

Maybe we should do something like that here.

Everybody needs to understand the rules of engagement, post nothing to them, except if it's going to be the image.....

    EDIT
    Got it....

Been guilty myself of responding to certain trolls, I think we regulars should refrain from responding to them, do as benham3160 suggests just post something irrelevant. Or simple all agree to just post up "troll alert".

Except if they are offering duff advice to a newbie. Counter their claims but point the post at the newbie.

Adding them to ignore, wont really work as we wont see what they are posting, so can not contradict it.

However I have noticed that sometimes we accuse newbies of being a PPC stooge or troll and they turn out not to be. Anyone remember Smithy's first posts?

I think we can all recognise a certain posters style, although sometimes we think its him and it may well not be. Counter their claims but do it in the third party and lets refrain from getting into a tit for tat or a slanging match with them.

Exactly, maybe just hitting random buttons on the keyboard is another option, or posting the old:

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat. "

They "get off" on creating pandemonium, best thing we can do it not rise to it, and instead simply frustrate them as much as possible.

I still like an image though, quite funny to see how het up they get when nobody replies with anything except a random image, maybe the sock puppet one too?

    sockpuppet.jpg

"Your honour, I did try to offer helpful advice to the defendant, but they responded with 38 pictures of a sock puppet......

    Regards,
    Andy

MSE Andrea will not reply to this thread so it's pointless complaining about it. Whilst this forum gives the best advice, it sadly has the poorest moderation team I've yet to encounter.

I would fully expect the moderation team to have the same knowledge of parking "charges" as the average journalist. ie none.

    "it's detracting from the purpose"

    ridiculous.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

This poster seems to know a lot about the forum for a complete newbie. Methinks he has been here before.

    Many times.
