Previous workplace has gone into administration - reference?

Hi guys,
I'm currently unemployed at the moment (full time uni student) - I had a P/T job which I left at Christmas.

I've just found out that the company has gone bust.

What should I do regarding a reference from them? My CV just has the name of my manager with the address of their head office, but surely that won't work anymore, and I have no way of contacting her.

Thanks
Rachel

  • Rachel,

I work in a HR depot fro a multi national company

To be honest with you very few places check ref's!-unless its a financial role ie banking, or handling money ie, retail, or for care of vunerable people ie. care assistant/childrens minder .

I have worked for a number of companies, and i have never known them to chase for them.. We only chase them if there is a problem with the employee. The amount of people who know people who cna give them a false ref is so high its hardly worth the time and man hours to chase them up.

BTW, i cant speak for all companies, but this is the case in the last 3 i have worked for.

Be honest, say the company has folded - but still provide all the info you can on them and offer 2 personal ref's instead(colege/uni tutor is always a good one!) if you have no other employment ones

Thanks Confused, however it's a retail role that I was in before and my next job will probably be the same! So I'm guessing I need some kind of reference from them..

They should be able to give you a written letter reference. I worked for a large retail company a couple of years ago and our store was shut down and we were given a letter.

It's pretty generic but it served its purpose of proving I'd worked there

I personally would give them the last known details you have for them and then let them "find out" that it is no longer there (as other have said some will still respond anyway) and then they can decide if they want to pursue it further or not.

When I started working in financial services we had to have full job references for the last 5 years and I have no idea if 1/2 the smaller companies I worked for were still in existance or not, plus I knew for a fact that a few were no longer at the site I was at but didnt know new sites/ if the company still existed etc.
