worrying about being broken into - am i just being paranoid?

I also have this fear, not all the time but it lurks in me ready to show up and make me misserable and paranoid. We live in a nice area, house alarmed, elderly neighbours in or around all day, other neighbours lovely and friendly, respectable etc but still i feel paranoid that some scum could get into my beautiful home, my life, and ruin it!
So your not being silly but you do, like myself, need to control this fear, push it to one side so you can enjoy your time away.
When you come back you can start working with your local neighbourhood watch team and council and get that alleyway lit up like the Vegas strip and maybe join/ start a neighbourhood watch scheme?
Good luck and i hope you manage to enjoy your time away0 -
Get the cat micro chipped.0

Thanks all
Cat is microchipped just in case, but she is terrified of people (rescue cat ill treated in past) so if she did run away it'd be unlikely she'd allow herself to be caught.
I would love to move, but hubby is buying the flat, so not easy to sell when street has such a bad name at moment, so we are stuck for time being. It's such a shame as we have lived here years and its only quite recently gone downhill.
I went out this morning to find empty beer and cider bottles littered all over alley and front garden along with other rubbish - it looks like a party has occurred during night! We do have a outside light in alley, but the outside wall is being replastered, so maintenance company have asked us to unwire it whilst this work is carried out.
Have never considered the pet sitter, to be honest, as cat hates strangers (and mum usually does it) but I will look into it.0 -
My husbands parents are a bit paranoid about being broken into themselves and all I would say is don't advertise you are going to be away, his parents shut their curtains even if they are just out for the day, I see lots of people doing this to prevent people from staring in and seeing what they have but it just advertises that there's noone at home, I always know when my neighbours go on holiday as they close the curtains, it's just daft!
For me, I have never worried about it, and I can be a bit OCD with cleanliness myself but as far as being broken into, I just think if someone's going to do it, they will so there's no point ruining your life worrying about what might happen.Aug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -
I completely understand about the cat! I had a nightmare the other day that the zombie apocalypse had started and I was more worried about what to do about Archie than having my face bitten off!
Have you thought about a cattery for the night? Does your cat have up to date inoculations (needed for catteries)?House saving Targets:

I too have house cats and this is one of my worries! But I would recommend a cattery for an overnight stay.0

Don't worry about the cat not being human friendly. A good house pet sitter will do as you ask and just ignore the cat all night if thats what you want
After reading and adding to this thread earlier i went onto our local council website and checked out information on the neighbourhood watch team. It seems my street and couple next to us dont have a 'street representative' so ive contacted the police involved and asked for an information pack. I'm 34, have a bit of time to dedicate to this and would like to know my neighbours better and get involved in the community so hopefully i can egt involved in our local neighbourhood watch0 -
Make sure your insurance is up to date, leave unreplaceable items with mum and cat at cattery - sorted - enjoy!Haters are gonna hate - you're not obliged to participate0

Thanks again.
House insurance is up to date, so that's one thing.
Not sure if I could put cat in cattery, as she HATES other cats - is really psycho around them, and she panics if an inside door is shut on her, due to ill treatment in past, she even panics at vets, so much so the vet advised us to only bring her in when REALLY REALLY necessary - eg for jabs and yearly check over, as they are concerned by how worked up she gets...
I'm thinking a cat sitter is way to go, as we have an automated cat feeder for her, all they need to do is literally sit and completely ignore her - this is what my mum does usually lol!
Thank you all, I know my fear is a little irrational but its just one of my 'things' my OCD causes me to panic over.0 -
Would you be able to bring the cat to your mum rather than vice versa?0
