Bit of background first - split from ex last year, she is one of life`s bill horders and created a lot of debt without my knowledge. When we split I took my CC debt and am paying that, this is my only debt that I am aware of. Both moved on, new partners etc.
Got a "verification" letter yesterday from Buchanan Clark & Wells asking if I am said person, they have traced me thru credit ref agencys to my new address & could I contact them etc etc. Knowing who they are it is clearly some sort of debt owed, however I have no idea who to, what amount or when it was last acknowledged.
Whats my best course of action ? As far as I can see they are fishing...
(And before someone says get your credit file, I have been trying to do that for months, however up until now I have been unable to pass online verification and have no bills here to show as proof of address.)

If there is a genuine debt then they will write again with details.
As you say, it's just a fishing attempt and could even have nothing to do with you.
I would wait to see if they write again with details, then go from there.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Cheers for the reply
My ex was a good one for putting bills in my name, trouble is she never actually spoke to me about it....
Will ignore then, if they write again with more details I will post back for advice.0 -
I've had a similar letter from BCW recently - sent to an address I've never stayed at. But they've never contacted me at my home address? Which I think is odd...
Last contact with these guys was approx 3 years ago - they were chasing me for £8500 electricity debt for a company who occupied business premises BEFORE I took them over. They are utter !!!!!!!s to deal with. DO NOT speak to them. I proved the debt wasn't mine a number of times, but they kept coming back every so often and tried again.
Avoid speaking to them at all costs - get everything in writing - these guys, especially, don't like that.
good luck.0 -
DW I have no intention of ringing these muppets. If any contact is made will be done by post.0

ok so got another letter today stating they are chasing payment for their client Ambrose Wilson to the tune of £2955.65. I have never opened an account with AW or signed anything, however my ex did and probably put it in my name.
Hell can freeze over before I pay her debts, advice please, write a prove it letter back ?0 -
Assuming it was the ex, when would she have taken this account out?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Would guess 2 - 3 years ago. We split last Feb so I would have been around when she opened the account but I knew nothing about it being opened in my name.0

My ex-boyfriend did the same thing with me, the cheeky so-and so! I didn't know anything about the debts until I started getting letters in the post when he was living in a different country.
As much as it pained me, I paid them all as unfortunately I couldn't prove that I knew nothing about them and I didn't want what credit rating I had left affected.0 -
my credit rating is shot to hell anyway, comes with being married for 20 years to someone who dont give a stuff about bills, no way am i paying this thou.0
