I have fitted a system that combines output from a solid fuel boiler with that from our gas boiler.
I never pay for wood for the SF boiler. Burning it is carbon neutral - if you really believe that humans are responsible for anything more than a fraction of a percent of CO 2 emissions - which I don't. However it does save energy as a KJ of energy obtained from scrap wood is a KJ of gas saved for a rainy day.
In addition burning the wood saves me having to transport it to the tip, thus saving fuel etc.
