Parents used newreg which seems to be ok, was cheaper than dvla (dont know how) website fairly easy to use all docs sorted out in just over a week.0

Newreg aren't cheaper than the DVLA.
The DVLA quoted prices include all the fees such as the assignment fee you have to pay to actually put your new plate onto a car. Newreg don't include that, you find out about it later.
With the DVLA prices the only other expense you will have is the cost of getting the actual plate made up, which is about a tenner on eBay.0 -
Lum is spot on. Ever wondered how the same plate can be on newreg and the DVLA site at the same time?
That's because the DVLA hold the plates and companies like newreg have to buy them the same way you do, whilst adding on the fees. The DVLA are the only ones allowed to swap the plates about so it's like getting an apple off the tree rather than out of the barrel, unless of course you are buying one that is already on a car/assigned, that's a bit different as the owner can flog it to you seperately (such as through eBay)
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

5t.
They paid the same price as on the dvla, didnt have to have a plate made.
How much later do you find out about it, theyve had the reg on the car for 6 months?!0 -
Don't discount buying a plate of ebay - I've bought quite a few where owners are desperate to sell and picked up a good deal. Generally on retention (so fee paid) as most likely car they were on has been sold. Managed to 'turn' at a profit.0
