Moving from the normal 3 bed semi to a larger 4 bed detached house usually means at least 2 bathrooms and hopefully a downstairs toilet.
Bigger kitchen, large lounge, double garage! and a bigger garden.
You also have space between you and your neighbours
We live in a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom property and as the kids have grown up ( and still live at home :-( ) we have room for our own space.
Have a look at offset mortgages and take a slightly larger mortgage with the extra money safe in the offset account to cover emergencies and work at clearing the mortgage in 10 years.
Go for it while you are young
  • I would move also. There is no substitute for space with a growing family. We are just moving from a three bed to a four bed so we can have a guest room. You clearly know the area well, just make sure you don't pay too much! Get a serious offer on yours, hopefully to a FTB before you start looking, then push your good position to drive a hard bargain on your next move. That £50k difference may come down to £30/35k, or less, who knows?

Actually there is a substitute, a family that is not stressed by over extending on their financial commitments and have time for their children.

Life is not all about the size of the house and parents who have time are important.

I think you will know when you need to move and won't be asking the question on a forum.

    Good luck with your decision.

A £50k mortgage does not seem that it would cause the OP stress.

Have you considered working fewer hours? Spending more time as a family? You are obviously in a great financial position, and want to do something positive for the family with the surplus. Money can buy property, but it can also buy time - and I bet you and your wife are often heard wishing aloud that you had more! You could even spend some of the time doing up a property in Homes under the Hammer style - involving family members, or you could take a few months off and take the kids round the world, or buy a boat or ...

I'm not saying that you should do those things, just offering an alternative!
