I've been in this situation (several years ago). I didn't not want to go, so called the airline (we had allocated seats) and asked to change seats. They were very sympathetic and placed us at opposite ends of the cabin. I got a large seat with extra leg room, he got a cramped middle seat which squashed his legs :D

On the holiday, we didn't spend time together unless absolutely necessary (a trek in a group) but I still didn't speak to him, just the other travellers. I had a fantastic time, I even went on a date with a very handsome Argentinian :D

There are lots of friendly people in Oz, and lots of people travelling on their own. Be brave and go on your holiday :)

Don't forget if you cann't travel for any reason you are entitled to a refund of the Taxes, but only if you cancel the flight.
A no-show will result in you being unable to claim a refund.
Check the airlines website for their procedure.
You can also try others that specialise in recovering the taxes for a fee like www.missrefund.com as an example.
