Hi all,

Well after months of struggling with DearSon over his excessive computer use, refusal to come off the PC when told, and general grumpyness after an overlong minecraft session, I have decided we have to bite the bullet, and impose some technical limiters, simply so I don't spend half my life saying "will you log off that computer NOW", and arguing about whether he went on to the computer at 10 past or 20 past the hour

He has a PC running Windows 7 Ultimate, which is connected to our domain (so Windows Parental Controls not an option). I have set logon hours restrictions, but I have make those reasonably wide (say between 5 and 8 pm on school days), cos he may go onto the computer at different times each day, I need something that will log him off after an hour. TimesUpKidz claims to do this, and apparently can also set a time limit for when he is allowed to log on again.

So just looking to see if anyone has any comments about it.

Thanks
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

    Yah yah yah.

I remember when they put restrictions like that on at school.

We'd just boot from a Live CD or something, rendering the OS and domain restrictions useless.

Ur kiddy will always find a way around ur PC controls.

Why not take him to cub scouts or something instead? Poor lil git probably only uses the PC cuz he's bored.

Thank you so much for that valuable and informed opinion Mr Thrifty.

Are there any parents who have used this software? Can you tell me what you thought of it please?

I agree with part of what Mr Thrifty says.

It would depress me about the state of modern youth if your Dear Son was not able to bypass any technological obstacle you put in his way (assuming you do not 'do computers' for a living). Sadly the problem is social, not technological, and your question is much like the "how do I prevent my son accessing pornography?", much discussed in threads in the past.

No doubt you have already Googled the reviews of the quite-illiterately-named "Times Up Kidz", and seen that as you type the name one of the suggestions includes the word "crack" at the end... They're ahead of you.
