Zyban experiences

I am curious to hear success stories of those who have quit smoking on Zyban.
Did you experience any side effects? If so what were they?

I am day 7 and have just upped the dose. I am now smoke free, but feeling a bit zombie like today. Which may or may not be caused by the Zyban.

I tried Zyban years ago when it first came out.

I ended up feeling like a boiled owl. Didn't sleep for the tree weeks I was on it. Felt "buzzy" all the time and couldn't keep my legs and arms still for more than a few seconds. Horrible stuff in my experience!

I had a trouble free course of Zyban and it did work. I was clear for weeks and was on the last week of the course. Unfortunately I stopped then because I was on holiday and wanted to enjoy myself and even though I didn't feel like cigarettes I started to smoke again. In my opinion then Zyban works and it's worth enduring any of the side effects (it was derived from an anti-depressant used in the Vietnam War). Unfortunately I'm not able to take another course because I started on medication that it would clash with.

I didn't get on with it when if first came out as left me twitchy like puppypants, finally kicked the habit with good old willpower and a lot of sugar free lolly's, but on the other hand a woman I work with has been smoke free for 7 weeks now and been fine on it
  • Thanks for your replies. I am feeling very spaced out and buzzy today, which I am guessing is because I upped the dose today.
Going to see how I feel in the morning and decide whether to carry on taking it or not.

My DH and a friend took it at the same time. They both felt incredibly ill from it, although no-one mentioned feeling like a boiled owl!

Anyhow, he felt so ill he came off it and still smokes.
I have given up smoking 3 times in my life. 2 when I found out I was pregnant - I went off them. Unfortunately several years later I started again at a very stressful time in my life. I too have just given up (9 days). this time I used one of those nicorette things that looks like a tampon. Having never used NRT, I found it very effective, it really helped. My DH unfortunately still hasn't given up :(

Spaced out or not: if it's working and you're stopped smoking then persevere. It'll be worth it in the end.

Awesome advice! Believe it or not somethings are actually worse than smoking!

You sound like a person who would lock a heroin addict in a room and watch them die saying 'itll be worth it in the end'

  • No wonder I have been feeling funny. Have just realised your not meant to take the 2 tablets TOGETHER and are supposed to space them 8 hours apart.

You're forgetting I've done a course of Zyban. I know what the side effects are. I believe they can be worked through although admittedly every person is different. Zyban won't kill you - smoking will.

As for heroin addicts: yes, they should be forced to give up. Not by cold turkey but they should be locked up in a camp, not allowed outside access, and given regular medication to ease them off the drug.
