A pleasant surprise...

Having finally become debt free after 4 years, we are now in a position to replace our ageing Ford Focus. This car was nearly new when we got it 8 years ago and bought through an on-line broker. At the time the costs were very much in our favour as the initial depreciation had reduced our purchase price by 30%, so we had thought to do the same again.

We have been looking at various other makes, new and nearly new, and found the difference between the new and nearly new prices were much smaller than 8 years ago regardless of make and model. In one case the difference was only £500 between new and nearly new on the same model. The arguments against buying brand new were becoming less convincing.

To come to the point of this post, we chose to go with a new Ford when our main dealer pointed out that Ford themselves offer 3 years of free servicing to NHS employees. This is on brand new cars only. This is a national, not local, deal apparently. I am told it applies to almost all of the Ford range, with only the most basic versions of the Ka being excluded.

For us, that free servicing will equate to a £700-£800 saving. So we are doing the one thing we thought we would never do and buying brand new car. Who'd 'a thought....

It's called the Advantage programme, not just for NHS,there are loads of companies and organisations on the eligible list,Marks and Spencer,John Lewis,B&Q,Asda,Shell,Airbus,Royal Mail,Debenhams, coucils, police forces etc. Not a lot of people are aware of it and I don't think it's promoted very well. I was talking to the HR director of Sainsbury's a couple of months ago and even he wasn't aware of it even though they're one of the eligible companies.
