The reason more people in this country don't do it is price of land.
If that is your budget for land then I would say unfortunately like many its just a pipe dream (in the vast majority of areas in the UK) from watching "property-p0rn"0 -
There are plenty of timber frame manufacturers around; especially up here. Really only way to build a house now (in Scotland).
For a house you want (ie fairly decent spec) I would think £1200m2 to be quite cheap now on a full contract.0
