Oh, my Canadian Boating license has apparently just come through.

I'm not sure where you put this on a CV for English employers, I'm err sure there must be a spot (near the list of Blue Peter badges you hold?)

Yes I've missed something here as well. Is it a course at your own uni? or somewhere else?

I realised I love learning things and that part of why I like teaching is learning what I have to teach.:D

Interesting thing about Napier was that he was IIIRC a religious fanatic who watned to abolish multiplication and division as they were ungodly, and replace them with addition and subtraction (hence inventing logarithms).

Spent his retirement writing anti-Catholic tracts, what a charmer!

Whilst I'm trying work out what I have failed to take in, I was also confused by missk, Lydia and you (zag) saying you were unemployed? (or that was how I recall it)
Hopefully I have misunderstood something and/or you have got other things arranged.

Can I please say a big thanks for the comments on long division. For the past probably thirty something years, I've been trying to hide the fact I can't do it, convinced that I was the only one...

It's OK. We're not unemployed IRL. Just in Wheezy's fantasy hiring plans:

LIR as office designer, michaels as senior buyer, chewie heads up the legal dept, sss555s to do the accounts, PN to run the website and Nikkster to make sure the mucous membranes of all staff are correctly looked after. Notsosinglesue can come and go when she wants.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I can understand that. I can do long division, but I have spent a lot of my life hiding the fact that I don't know my 7, 8 or 12 times tables properly, because I was in Australia for a year (where they didn't teach them at that age) while everyone else was learning them back in the UK.

Yes, I've felt a bit conscious of it too (whilst not bothering to learn how to do it). Can't say I've ever really found it has held me back, and my undergrad involved some pretty  maths (none of which I would have a clue where to with now).

I don't find long division hard, I do it in my head.

I've recently been in 2-3 shops where managers/proprietors have tried to offer a discount using a calculator.... and I've had to correct them each time, having carried out the very simple sums in my head. e.g. 20% reduction from £4.95 doesn't make the price £4.60.... in fact, in the end, he "let me have it" for £4 and believed he was doing me an extra favour ... I pocketed my £1 change knowing I'd been robbed, but he was completely lost.

N'ah.......people who reckon they can cannot often enough. Dh used to see tht all the time when he did a lot of due diligence. In fact..it was him knowing he could not so triple checking things that found an awful lot of dodgy maths out on his jobs, not the people who thought they could iyswim.

Viva.....there is a reason calculators are popular. :). I feel bad you have worried about it.

Isn't that funny? I was in Australia for my 7, 8 and 12 times tables, so they are fine. Ld on the other hand..
