That's nice. I hate to think of you running short of houses to buy/own/rent/live in ..... I can sleep soundly at night now....

We own 14 properties at the moment, 5 of which we could live in at the moment (Our home, Moscow, Tbilisi, Sochi and Malaga).

If you average it out over 25 years, the mortgages are cheaper than the hotel bills :)

Seeing as some of you lot like looking at houses, has anyone seen a good/interesting looking L-shaped family home house that they can share a photo/street-view with me? I want to design (blatantly copy) a house.

I'd never buy another 'l' house. I don't like them.

Why do they all seem to have integral garages in the L bit?
It's probably the other way round. They think "we need a garage... a double ... hey, we could bung some more rooms on top too"

    You're almost certainly right.

I'm now thinking about catslide roofs. Or indeed, putting a single storey garage in the empty part of the L, as long as it doesn't eat into proper living space.

    100 miles an hour!

How deep/wide do people think a garage should be?

This one came up this week near us. To me it is hideous but may be it would help with 'what not to do?!

I like the gallaried landing, but then it does waste space. Then again with that double garage the upstairs must be bigger than the downstairs.

I take it they are not all empty.

For a single, you need space at the back for a worktop and room to work (say 3' minimum footspace in front of the workbench) - and a car should be able to park in it, with the doors open, so you can get round and vacuum it out.

A double should do all that + have room for the 2nd car to be parked alongside with its doors closed.

You can't beat a good garage.

    Blimey, 20% completed already.

Garages should be wide enough to open the doors of a typical car on both sides and have room at the end for "stuff". Double garages should be that x 2. They should always have power and light even if not attached.

I thought exactly that too. Also the lounge proportions make it too long and narrow, the dining room is too small and forms a corridor, the kitchen isn't really big enough to be a kitchen/breakfast and the corridor upstairs seems to go right round outside the door of the second bedroom with a dressing room wasting space. Also one ensuite has no window :( and the master bedroom overlooks the drive and probably the next door wall (because of the 'l' shape)

One plus is the bedroom sizes are OK rather than having tried to fit in 5 and ended up with at least 3 tiny ones.
