How far back can you reclaim taxes overpaid

I need to make some reclaims for a pension which I have not received any tax relief on. i have been paying this pension for around 20 years and it was OK while I was under PAYE as I paid tax and therefore could claim back the tax.
When I went self employed I thought that I was already getting the relief at source, but I was paying it gross. ( I need to pay more attention to detail )
How many years back can I reclaim taxes. I have been told 3 , 5 and 7 years, so would like a more definative answer
Thanks

You say in your other post on the other thread that this is a s226 plan - which is why it is paid gross.

This question makes no sense at all though because as a self-employed person you would have already filed tax returns every year.

Were the returns completed incorrectly, if so by whom?

It is entirely my husbands fault as he thought the Pension was paid net ( its his pension ) and so he hasn't been claiming any tax relief. It was only when I recently got out the actual pension document, as we wanted to review the whole pension situation he has, that I read it was paid gross
