Help painting garden seat.

I was about to get my husband to take our old garden seat to the tip as had seen better days, when our daughter decided she would have it for her front garden, where she can sit and watch the children playing and she wants it painted cream.
I have sanded it down quite smoothly but still patchy woodstain visible. Anyone any ideas what I should do next and what to paint it with, at a guess I would say she would want a matt finish.

You would need to paint it with at least 2 coats of whit solvent (oil) based undercoat. Then apply a coat of satinwood or oil based egg shell.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

Thanks for your help ....so I do not need to buy a tin of paint that has exterior written on it.
I have gone through quite a few sandpaper pads on the sander.....then buying the undercoat then the top coat, not to mention time spent .....quite tempted to buy her a new seat for £45 ....bet there's not much price difference !!!

I painted an old bench which was going to be thrown out by my parents. Quick sand down and two coats of Cuprinol Shades (think we paid £20 for a 2.5l tin) and it looks great. We painted it a pale blue as we wanted to bring a bit of colour to the garden and having given it two coats and painted the windows on our sons playhouse there is still about 1/3 tin left.

We all have our own ideas as to what best to advise, but in my experience I have always had great success from using the following, after sanding down of course to bare wood. I did out 3 Garden Benches in Walnut Satin.

Ronseal Quick Drying Woodstain. Rainproof in 30 minutes. It does exactly what it says on the tin.

It resista cracking, peeling and blistering. Is very easy to apply and then wash out your brushes under the tap.

    All the best

Well, thanks everyone for all your suggestions, you've given me a fair few to consider for my old garden seat and I may even now plan painting it's new replacement to brighten the place up !
