I heard about this listening to an interview with Dr Tony Kenyon, one of the developers at University College London on Monday http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01hxpy2/Material_World_24_05_2012/ (it's around half way through).
It uses a new super thin substance made from silicon oxide, and the resistance varies according to the volume of data transmitted. But the advantages are unbelievable; power requirements of one thousandth yet with 100-fold speeds! I think it means that you will no longer need separate types of memory; everything will run and be stored in this RAM (power not required for storage like current RAM).

Where will it all end?
