Any proms/leaving dos coming up?

Got two daughters and one is very jealous that my oldest has got a prom party coming up because she is leaving high school. We used to call it the dinner and dance when I was at school... now it's americanised to the prom.

I'm in Manchester and find it odd. Anyone else going through this? (Good luck with getting them a dress.. :( )

It's not just the proms the kids have cottoned onto from the states these days either. I remember 'penny for the guy' around bonfire night but this has now been replaced by 'trick or treat'.
No need to learn 'sh*t happens' - this is just sh*t!

I think they are pretty much standard with most secondary schools now. My DD had her year 11 one and this year has her 6th form one.
TBH dresses weren't too much of a problem there are some very good sites on ebay at the moment, we found a brilliant ebyer that was a shop as well. She had a standard size but they could do made to measure as well.
It doesn't have to cost the earth to make them look the part.

I had a prom when I was 16 (now 25) so it's not a new new thing, my school had the first one the year above me, so 10 years ago.

I got my dress back then for 50 quid, which I paid for myself, I was told to save up to get one. My friend done her dress as her textiles project. I guess it's too late to do that now though.

I remember prom being on Friday and everyone planned to bunk off school to get ready, so the teachers decided, let's just let 11 years have the afternoon off, since they're all gonna bunk off anyway!

I think I may have been showing my age as 10 years to me is no time at all. When I was at school the only time I ever saw a prom was when 'Carrie' was being shown on tv. Now if they were more like that......
