Worried about ID Fraud

Morning all,

I’ve read these boards occasionally for years and until now never had any urgent reason to register and post but I come to you in need of help!

At the end of Febuary I had a call from Capital One (I have a credit card with them) asking me to confirm if I had made several online transactions the day before. After a bit of digging it turned out someone had created an account in my name with an online clothes retailer and had ordered 100 quids worth of shirts to an address on the other side of the country from me.

Fortunately everything was resolved with Capital One pretty quickly and I wasn’t liable for the bill.

I checked my credit report today to find an account I didn’t recognise. It was with the company behind Jacamo, another online clothes retailer. I contacted them straight away and apparently you don’t even need any card or bank details to open a credit account with these guys - you just enter your details then they send the clothes out with a bill. Again a false address was used and luckily Jacamo sussed something wasn’t right and never sent any clothes out.

Two attempts (one successful) at fraud in a few months have got me worried that this is going to become a regular thing. Someone obviously has my details and a penchant for clothes bought online. Both retailers I contacted said they don’t investigate any fraudulent transitions – they just cancel and block the accounts, so I can’t see this person(s) stopping trying.

Is it worth reporting this to the police? Does anyone else have any experience of this? Any advice or suggestions on what I should do would be greatly appreciated!

p.s. I’m not sure if I’ve posted this in the correct board but I couldn’t find one specific to this sort of problem!

The police won't be interested, as they let the banks look after these fraud issues. Since the person using your details has yet to be successful, I don;t believe you have anything to worry about, as you are protected regardless, and they'll move on to someone else.
  • The first time they were successful, by the time Capital One called me the stuff had already been sent out.

Fingers crossed they get fed up and leave me alone!
