Broken ignition key

My daughter has broken the ignition key for her car and is being quoted £111 plus VAT plus extra charges of £70 for security etc.
Is this normal, it seems excessive.:(

Give us a clue - what's the car? is the key broken in the lock? Or is it the remote functionality which isn't working? Or is it the immobiliser not working?

Its a Suzuki, the key has snapped in the middle of the stem, not in the ignition.

It is quite normal to be charged silly money for a key and an extra fee to have the security coding done.
There is an option though :)
Call your local used car garage, the type of guy that has anything from £400 Polo to a £10k saloon and ask them who they use. These dealers are very cost conscious and always know teh cheepest place to get stuff done, keys being a classic as people PX with only 1 key and new buyer wants 2.

I just had a new key, coded to the car and a missing key removed - £85 all in, Vauxhall wanted £210

I take it the key and the 'fob' are on and the same in this case?

if not and the key is separate to the fob, and you have both parts I would expect a skilled keycutter could make up a new one?

I think weve found someone fairly locally to do one for £59.95:)

I can't see the key, but I'd be suprised if it cost a lot.

If it's a tibbie (or similar) type key it should be quite easy for somebody like Timspons to cut and clone.

    Regards,
    Andy
