Italy bed tax

Sorry if this has already been mentioned but I find 'Search' doesn't always seem to work for me.
The bed tax in Italy is now in force and the tax is payable locally and I believe it can vary between 1 and 3 euro per person per night. I've just come back from a town in Tuscany and we paid 14 euros for 2 people for 7 nights.
I did a Google search but it is showing results from 2011 where this is a new tax that came into force about 2 weeks ago.

But think what we'll SAVE without the Pasty tax.0 -
Soolin, Italy are not content with tourists just visiting their country, they introduced this "tourist tax", which as you say varies between 1 and 3 Euros per person per night.
Perhaps the UK should introduce a tax for tourists from those countries which have imposed this tax on others?0 -
A tourist or hotel bed tax is quite common around the world and is a big source of income for many places. In the US you often have city and state hotel taxes to pay which can significantly add to the listed price of a hotel room - but on the other hand, they don't have 20% VAT on hotels like we do.
Some cities in the UK have looked at the idea of imposing a local tax on hotel rooms but nowhere has actually gone ahead with it yet.0 -
As far as I was aware this was only in Florence and in Venice. I know that Germany and Austria also do a bed tax.
Kinda rubbish though, I'm already paying for the hotel room lolCan't think of anything smart to put here...0 -
At least there wasn't a daily resort fee too. A couple of euros a night isn't too bad.0

Why? If they want to implement a tax, why not just implement it for everyone? It sounds like it would be a nightmare to enforce!
Not to mention, is it actually legal to charge Italians a tax but not Greeks? (Just for example, don't know if Greece has these taxes). And that we have a really high flight tax in the UK compared to other European countries.0 -

Yes, I'm sure that would be illegal under EU law as you'd be charging people from one EU country a different rate than from another one.
I'm not against these taxes in principle but it should be left to the local authority to introduce them, set the rate and keep the money as central government already gets the VAT. I can imagine in cities popular with tourists or business visitors then it could bring in quite a lot of money.0
