Agree - platinum is better than white gold! My ring still looks as good as new after 9 months :)

    Where as -

I loved that OH picked out my ring! :rotfl: he knows I don't wear a lot of jewellery, (no ear piercing even) n that I would want something simple and classic. He also knew I hate costume jewellery!

I loved the fact that he put so much thought in to it, and he got it right! :D I never take it off! I honestly wouldn't really want a bigger diamond! I prefer the high quality. He did say after wards that he could exchange it if I didn't like it, but it was perfect. :)

I felt exactly the same. My OH chose the ring - it is my birthstone (citrine) surrounded by lots of litlle diamonds, It is gorgeous and so differnet and so special. The fact that he researched the ring, went to stores, bought it for me and had it resized just makes it so special. I look at it all the time and it just makes me smile so very much.

We are currently 4000 miles apart and he got down on one knee in the airport carpark on my last visit in April (flying back to him on Thursday - woo hoo!). He said he wanted to do it in the actual terminal but it was frighteningly busy (and a small terminal). I will remember his proposal and seeing the ring for the first time in the box he held out open to me for the rest of my life.

I know that it is each to their own but I was so happy that he bought the ring for me. However, we will be selecting the wedding rings together as we want matching ones.

Biting is excellent. It's like kissing, only there's a winner.

  • Here is the £6000 HM Samuel one which I think looks pretty similar to the £600 amazon one, am I missing anything:

Sorry but to me they are totally totally different rings. The samuels one has a much more modern feel and the other more classic.
I personally think the samuels is quite nice, but don't like the other. I'm not saying your gf would be the same - but I'd pay attention to overall style of the ring, not just the diamond!!

I'd definitely go and see some in person. Then even if you decide to buy online you'll have a better understanding of what you're after.

We went to the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham it was Definitely worth the journey - we got a much better quality diamond for our budget than I could even have hoped for and I'd done a lot of research prior to our visit plus the choice is amazing.

I also agree with the points about choosing the ring together. I understand the element of surprise and the fact the other half had chosen the ring for you etc but it is a very important piece of jewellery that i will wear for the rest of my life so it had to be perfect and I think it would have been awkward if I had wanted to change the ring my OH had chosen. My OH got a "fake" engagement ring from Primark to make the proposal a surprise.

Good luck with your choice and congratulations!

My fiance proposed with a replica silver and crystal ring from a local jewellers as he knew I'd want to choose my own - I was impressed as he wanted me to have a ring to wear while we chose one. Also, most people couldn't tell unless you told them, lol.
We went to Birmingham Jewellery Quarter last weekend and found the perfect ring. Like Tina I found I got a bigger and better diamond than I was expecting, for far cheaper than the local jewellers. We also bought my wedding ring too as I wanted them to match perfectly and didn't want to send my engagement ring away to get it matched.
