Well, not wanting to put a spanner in the works, but are you sure this is the right way to do it ??

When DH and I got engaged, he asked me, I said yes, and then we went to a jewellers shop and chose the ring together. That way I was able to choose one we both liked, with no risk of a stone being too big/too yellow or whatever. He didn't tell me what the budget was, but we agreed that if he said "no, I don't like the colour of that one" then I would understand what that meant ;)

If you really want to do the big gesture, then buy one from a local jeweller, and ask him if you can exchange it if she doesn't like it. Present it to her, and a couple of days later (when she's had chance to consider it after the excitement has died down a little bit), tell her you won't mind taking her to change it if it isn't quite what she wanted.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

We did the same! I didn't mind that OH proposed without a ring, I definitely wanted to pick my own. :D OP - unless you know *for sure* what your GF would like, I would let her choose.

    Where as -

I loved that OH picked out my ring! :rotfl: he knows I don't wear a lot of jewellery, (no ear piercing even) n that I would want something simple and classic. He also knew I hate costume jewellery!

I loved the fact that he put so much thought in to it, and he got it right! :D I never take it off! I honestly wouldn't really want a bigger diamond! I prefer the high quality. He did say after wards that he could exchange it if I didn't like it, but it was perfect. :)

I can remember feeling quite pressured picking out the wife's ring. Tiffany won't let you return a ring once it's been resized...so I had to choose between having the ring sized and not being able to return it if she didn't like it - or giving it to her too small to fit on her finger, but with the option to exchange.

In the end, I thought "in for a penny..." and just got it resized...I thought it would be weird for her to have the ring, but not be able to show it to people on her finger...

You see I really admire the "going all in" approach Idiophreak. :)

    Thanks.

I was pretty sure she'd like it, so wasn't too worried. She'd spent plenty of time "subtly" hinting which kinds she liked over the years :)

Same here! I loved the experience of trying on rings in the shop, though I found it slightly annoying to be engaged for a month or so before actually having a ring.

I second the thing about finger/hand size. My ring size is I and my 0.75 carat diamond (surrounded by tiny 0.03 carat ones) really looks huge on my finger ('Brighton rock' one of my friends dubbed it :) )

I wrote a long post but it disappeared, grrr! Basically I said my fiance proposed, we chose the ring together the next day and he gave me the budget. I loved choosing my own ring, would have felt terrible if i'd wanted to change a pre chosen one. I didn't just look at the diamond but also the metal. I chose a platinum 1/2 carrot. If you can afford more you could think about platinum instead of white gold as it doesnt need to be redipped and doesnt lose colour.

Sorry...don't mean to tease and only in the lightest of hearts...but I am now imagining you walking around with a shiny platinum carrot shaped rock on your finger :rotfl: :)

I also feel completely rude because in my first post to the OP I forgot to say HUGE CONGRATULATIONS!!! Yay for you deciding to get engaged and what a lucky girl she must be :D :T
