sharing the marital home after divorce - scotland

Does anyone know if it is possible, and also what the tax implications would be, if we choose to keep the family home as a shared asset after divorce?
We are trying to keep change to a minimum for the kids. Ex has always worked away and is now working overseas.
Financially, because of the housing market, it makes sense to keep the property in joint names and sell at a later date.
Divorce would be under Scottish law (I think) or could he file under Australian law? Would that be any easier?
Would really appreciate some guidance on this. Neither of us want to involve solicitors at this stage, we want to know what is possible first and then 'instruct' the solicitor, not the other way round!

Thanks in advance...
