Found a really good disk defragmenter..free to use!

Hi

Recently upgraded to Windows Vista but the disk defragmenter in vista is excruciatingly slow so was looking for a third-party defragmenter. Anyway i came across JkDefrag (http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/) which performs as well as the other highly rated ones (eg diskeeper, perfectdisk, ultimatedefrag), and best of all, its COMPLETELY free to use! The program is a doddle to use, you just run the .exe file, nothing to install! However if you want more control, then you run the software with the GUI (again nothing to install) which lets you customize settings such as optimization method, speed at which software runs etc.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

  • sorry, don't want to sound rude - how do you know its as good as any of the others? Have you run disk benchmarks after to compare?

    Hi guys

sorry i should have elaborated a bit more...i'm not a technical expert in defragmentation (and i never will be!) but according to the program writer, (Jeroen Kessels) this uses exactly the same defragmentation and file optimization algorithms as all the other leading defrag programs. Also with this program you can defrag with as little as 1% free hard disk space, Perfectdisk requires at least 5%. Prior to using Jkdefrag, i used Perfectdisk 8.0 on a trial basis but i found it too slow on my pc...Jkdefrag does what it says on the tin but a lot faster.

However as the saying goes "the proof is in the pudding", use it and see how it compares to your current defragmenter...after all it doesn't cost anything and you don't even have to install anything on your pc! you might be in for a pleasant surprise! :)

The best free defragmenting utility in my opinion remains the old Diskeeper Lite:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207

    Cons:
    - It's not updated anymore
    - It displays a nag screen on each run
    - It only defrags on demand

    Pro:
+ It's Diskeeper, one of the best (if not the best).

Hey, Windows comes with a perfectly good disk defrag tool... :P Haha, I'm surprised that wasn't the first thing someone said! Thanks for the tip though, will check it out (I love the freebie software, especially stuff that replaces MS cack).

Actually, the MS cack is based on an older Diskeeper engine.
That's why the defrag tool about box says "Microsoft AND Executive Software"

NTFS really shouldn't need defragging very often - Windows Vista certainly hasn't been out long enough to require disk defragging.

Windows XP was originally going to be supplied without a defrag tool, since the new NT File System it used is pretty well protected against fragmentation. It's only when people complained that they readded the defrag tool. Defragging really won't make much performance difference, even after several years of heavy use.

Norton (I think) used to have a good one .... about the only thing that was good about it!

Got to agree with Darksun, I'm dubious myself about the benefits of defragging nowadays.

Having said that the two I've used in the past that I liked were diskeeper and O&O defrag.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
