MOT, Tax and License Questions

Hi

I have just moved to a new address after splitting up with my girlfriend. Now at the end of this month my tax and mot are up, plus I need to change the address on my license.
But I all I have is my photocard license and I am having trouble getting the rest of my paperwork off the ex.
Any ideas what to do before the end of the month?

Cheers Buzz

Well for a start, go and get an MOT test done.
You'll then have a new certificate.

Or get a new 12 month tax disc now whilst you still have a valid MOT cert & insurance.

That's the tax out of the way, allowing you time to get MOT done and re register the car.

    When does MOT run out?
    Tax valid till May 31st?

Apply for a licence change of address online. You still have to send the old one back, but they issue the new one straight away so it'll give you time to get the paperwork.

If you can't get the V5 then apply for a new one in the new address stating that the old one's lost, and apply for tax at the same time. Over the counter at a DVLA local office is the easiest IF you've got one close by. It'll cost you £25 for the new V5 but at least it allows you to get things sorted without trusting that paperwork will catch up with you in time.

but can't get the tax without the relevent paperwork. Same with the license, I tried online but need the paper license as well.

If I had all of it I wouldn't of needed to ask the question.

nothing to stop you getting a fresh MOT.
Phone the insurance company to inform of the new address, and ask for a duplicate certificate.
Bingo within 48 hours you have the necessary papers.
Apply for tax stating you lost the V5, as descibed above.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Fair point with the licence, I'd forgotten that they ask for the number off the paper part. Still, the licence is less of a problem than the other bits - I was driving with an out of date address for something like 7 years just after the millenium cos I kept forgetting to change it. There's no way for them to pick that up unless you get stopped, in which case you should be fine explaining the situation - especially seeing as you should still be traceable from the old address.

So, sort the rest, give it a bit of time for your old paper licence to be "found" and if it hasn't turned up in a month or two, apply as if you'd lost the paper bit. It'll be another cost unfortunately, but all can be sorted.

Tax, MOT and insurance are the important bits for now though!

Can I declare it SORN with what I have?

Yep, SORN is no problem - just go online and tell them.

Bear in mind that you won't get the "confirmation letter" that they say they'll send cos it'll go to the address the car's registered at, but there's nothing in law to sa that you need that anyway - once it's declared you've done your bit. You can also check that the declaration has gone through ok online after a few days for peace of mind.

Remember that it needs to be off road for a SORN to be valid though - parked up on the road isn't good enough, even if it's not being used :)

    Sorry,
If you are talking to her ask her to tell you what the V5 document number is then tax online?

Or else you will have to SORN, no need for any paper work to do that you might aswell get it MOT tested before SORN. You can't SORN online, but you can SORN by using V14 from the PO, put your old address on the form.
Check online or phone them up later to ensure it is SORN. Or you can SORN by phone.
