Mortgage company think I have a default, but I don't?

My mortgage broker has been in touch a week after applying to say that YBS have found I have £20 outstanding to a building society. They claim that due to data protection, they can't say who I owe and I can't figure it out either. My broker advised me to check on Experian which shows no alerts and a score of 999 so that offers no clues either.
Is there anything more I can do to find out where this is coming from? Should I be worried that this could cause a problem? I'm putting down a deposit of 25%, have 1 credit card that has always been paid each month, likewise phone bill etc.

Go to www.checkmyfile.com and take their 30 day free trial (one of the few that is genuine and easy to cancel - 0800 number) and I suspect you will find the answer there !Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Is that not the same as Experian? I'm wary of doing too many credit searches at such a critical time.0

They won't tell you.
If you really really think it is not you and you don't have a twin, then appeal, however a lender is unlikley to overturn their decision unless you prove the £20 from x never existed.
such a small default, can you not go somewhere else?
By the way, 999 credit score means nothing in this day and age. It's lenders own scorecard and appetite for lending that are the main factors.0 -

There are three key sources - Experian (Credit Expert), Equifax and CallCredit (Noodle) - the content can vary between sources.
Checkmyfile collect full data from the last two (limited data from Experian) so would complete your set.
Once this is to hand certainly an appeal may be the way to go - or another lender who would pre-authorise the issue.
Obtaining these reports yourself does not count as a credit report and does not impact on your credit rating.
Your broker really should be taking you through this.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Sorry, what do you mean, 'go somewhere else?' And does 'unlikely to overturn' mean I have been turned down? They want to see proof of my deposit so I thought it might just be a small bump in the road but not a show stopper.
YBS have very good rates, I'm loathed to lose the deal.0 -
It's rather hard to be sure it is incorrect or not if I don't know what it pertains to. Certainly no one has ever chased me for payment.0

You cant prove you dont owe a debt unless they tell you who they think you owe the money to.
If you genuinely dont know then you need to get in touch with the lender with your credit reports and plead your case.
However if it comes about you do owe the money and thent he chances are theyre not going to overturn the decision, so you could be wasting your time.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
