old account question

Hi, I have a very old savings account with less than £10 in and years ago (approx 10yrs or more) I had a current account which is either dormant or closed down - dont even have a card or statement for it.

Approx 4 days ago I get a letter from the bank saying opening balance and a net balance on this old current account (bearing in mind no contact for over 10yrs) stating an amount owed (I am going to check records at home), so I went into bank as it looked dodgy (scam dodgy) only to be told its valid but they can't tell me anymore as its a very old bank account (with abbey national) I would have to phone a number (even though letter has santander over it), I haven't phoned them yet as want to check my own records first, but want to know if there is anything I can do about it IF it is owed? any advice would be good thanks.

Comments

  • Dont' worry, if the account is that old and you haven't made any payments into it for at least 6 years (5 in Scotland), it should be Statute Barred by now so even if you 'owed' that money they wouldn't be able to collect it.
