Motor mileage

Options
Good afternoon. I run a small bird watching tour business. It states on the HMRC website you can claim 45 pence per mile if you use your own vehicle for business use, however on completing my tax return I was informed all I can claim is my tax back on the 45 pence, is this correct? If so why does it not state this on their web page?
Many thanks for any help!

Dave

    Hi

I suspect you were looking at part of the website that relates to employees, not self employed. The words 'use their own vehicle' are a giveaway for that - after all, not many self employed people use someone else's vehicle for work, but employees either use their own or have a company vehicle.

also that information is correct for employees (employers can pay them up to 45p a mile without any tax liability for the employee) but not self employed - who as you have found out, get tax relief on the 45p.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
