Best 5dr hot hatch - 5k?

you may struggle to get an ST for 5 grand though, unless its mega miles on it, sensible 2007 models are around £7k to £8k0

Once again many thanks all for taking the time to reply...
So far I think that:
- The Leon Cupra (with the TSI engine) is expensive, nothing reasonable under 7k. And the old 1.8T petrol one is not a worthy upgrade, what do you think?
- Skoda VRS - did not think about this one, thanks for the suggestion. Has any of you driven the 2L petrol one? How is it?
- Focus ST2/3 - Awsome in 5DR, complete package for me. Unfortunately, as mambo69 was saying, not around 5k, more like 7k...
- Saab, hmm. Don't know, probably not.
- Mondeo ST TDCI - intriguing, although a bit on the large side for me. Loads of them around, always a good thing.
I wish I only needed 2 seats...
Any other suggestions or thoughts will be much appreciated.
PS Just had another look at a few Mondeos ST TDCI (155), a lot of car for the money. I really like it. How does the engine feel?0 -
I have the diesel estate version of the Octavia VRS and had a hatch previously, they're immensely practical cars in both forms and I doubt you'd be disappointed with the two litre's performance over your current car.

If mpg isn't an issue (many say this but baulk at the reality) then I would say get something with a nice 6 cylinder engine like a Golf R32 or 4Motion or maybe the Focus 2.5 as you mentioned.
Forget paper 0-60 times just drive a larger enined small car - its a great combination. I had a VR6 Golf a good few years ago and it was a hoot and sounded fantastic also0 -
We've got a Mondeo and it's brilliant for motorway cruising. It is however approximately the size of a cruise ship and not much fun to park in town-centre multi-storeys.
It's definitely not a hot hatch.

I personally am a fan of the Leon Cupra's.0

How about a Saab 9-3 or 9-5 Aero for an off the wall choice. Cheap as chips for what you get in terms of performance and as long as they have been properly maintained, reliable too.
They can be had cheap...I believe they are Vectra platformed??Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
Remind me, the definition of a hatchback is? And an estate?
If the op wants a proper fast car they will do better with a 535 than some euro box with a stripe down the side.
It s not a "hot hatch" though is it !? Its a family sized estate car
Can't argue with the performance or value for money basis and as you say I would (and have albeit in saloon form) choose over any small high revving tin box but I probably wouldn't have done 15 years ago. I had a 540 previously and that still is the best overall car I have ever had. £ for £ better than the M50 -
I know its not a hot hatch but the OP wants 5 door practical car. Some one has a dig at me of offering up an option that is a bit out of the box then the second car they surgest is not available in hatch back either. Pot and kettle springs to mind.0
