Car insurance, can i drive hers?

The wife is doing driving lessons, got an insurance quotes down to £404 for her, as a new driver, 25 y/o female on a 1.4 Polo.

Now the bit im unsure about, i also have a car at the moment, insured fully comp, 5years ncb, but more points than i care for on my liscence (speeding:o ). If i go on her policy as a seond driver, it rockets to over £650.

I want to change to a van in the not so distant future, so i need my ncb to keep my own insurance low.

So if the van was registered in my name, and the car in hers, me with a fully comp policy, would i be able to get a policy to allow me to drive her car occasionally, even if only third party?

When i say occasionally, i mean probably no more than 10 times a year, hense the reason why i dont want to pay the £250 extra to go on her policy.

Insurance :confused::confused:
Cheers.

  • If you have fully comp insurance for your own vehicle then generally this lets you drive other vehicles with the owners consent and covers third party risks only on the vehicle when you are driving it.
    Check your insurance certificate (it is shown on mine) and if you can't see anything then check with your insurance company. It is usually limited to over 25s and I am not sure if the points affect it at all though.

    And also some (but not all) policies exclude cars belonging to you or your spouse.

    Actually they'll all exclude cars belonging to you but some will also exclude your spouse's car. The only way to find out if you can drive her car on your insurance is to look at your own policy documents basically
