I agree and I admit that he does have them sometimes at the weekend (when there's only us who sees him eating them!!!!). Saying that I do get the reduced sugar one which gives me some comfort. I'd rather he didn't have them every day though.

:D Peanut butter & grated carrot sandwiches :D
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

Peanut Butter is banned at my kids school - due to so many kids with nut allergies - which is a shame as both mine love it. My eldest has tuna pasta as hilstep2000 mentioned, and my youngest lives on cheese sandwiches.

I agree with savvy sues comments on the kitchen towel and poly bag idea, each day, their packed lunch boxes look like a bombs gone off - particularly if they've had yoghurt!!

I also agree with all the comments re. time. My eldest barely eats a thing during lunch time as she is so keen to get out and play - so quite often finishes off her lunch on the way home from school.

With summertime coming up, putting the drinks cartons in the freezer the night before is a good way of keeping the lunch cool, and in my eldests case, a novel way of encouraging her to drink during the day. A water bottle (plastic) soon turns to slush in a few hours, and is still nicely chilled when lunchtime arrives.

Re. September starts misty, at our school September intakes finish at 12, and go full time in January.

i love peanut butter ... but why should it be banned? my cousin is in reception, he's allergic to wheat, does that mean the school should ban everyone else from eating it in case he's tempted? and what about cheese, there are kids with dairy intolerances - i realise that eating nut might cause serious reactions in an allergic child but still - are snacks banned in case they were prepared where there might be nuts? sorry but i don't see the point of this ban - surely children with a potentially fatal allergy should be taught to never eat anyone else's food, so why can't the others have peanut butter?

There was a big thing about this at our school, and the justification was that those children with nut allergies, were so severe, that even sitting next to a child with a peanut butter sandwich could prove fatal. Hence the ban. Every term we always receive numerous reminder letters, reinforcing the point.

I am not sure if this is down to one parents instructions to the school, or if it is a decision the school has made.

I had assumed it was 'across the board' and was a decision that had been adopted by many schools.

Surely a jam sandwich is better than chips every day. We have to keep things in perspective! Kids most important part of lunchtime is they are out of the classroom and they get to hang around with their friends.
As for the nut thing there can be some cases where a person is so sensetive that even breathing in the same air that nuts are around in could kill them.
I'm sure schools have to do this otherwise there could be terrible consequences. Also if you were a parent of a child with nut allergy you would want to be assured that the child was safe at school.
My kids are so excited about packed lunch tomorrow. they have the same each - cheese sandwich (grated so it goes further;), orange squash, a plum, a quaker oats cereal bar (18 for £1) a cheese triangle (16 for £1) because they like to have something to fiddle with! and a serviette - posh ones from sainsburys orange stickered down to 10p for 30!

I've just done my first 'packed lunch' shop :D

I'm sick of my daughter (age 5) coming home hungry and saying that, for my £1.50 per day, she's had a chicken nugget, some sweetcorn and a cake

So I've made her a ham sandwich (on organic wholemeal), a pot of grapes, a yoghurt and a fairy cake. I've told her that she can take fruit juice on a wednesday but she's taking water on all the other days.

Apparently I should've let the school know that she won't be having their lunches before the holidays but I've only just decided so I'll have to apologise profusely in the morning :o

This thread's given me some good ideas, I agree about keeping it simple as they just want to play out at lunchtime don't they?
Just run, run and keep on running!

Do some schools definately serve chips every day? I thought they weren't allowed to.

At sons school chips are on the menu once a week at the very most.

Some still do, or get round it by having 'sauté potatoes' and so on. Candidate for an impending coronary has to be the school standard 'cheesy mash', good grief, try running around the playground after eating that!
My son has had a few problems with his behaviour at school, I will be watching things closely to see if the change in diet changes his behaviour.

My old school served chips every day, but only in the sixth form area. Possibly to entice students to eat in the canteen rather than go out and eat even worse food.
However at 50p for an apple, it was unlikely that any person would eat healthily.
