Best Value for Fish & Veg

Options
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help.

I'm trying to cut dowm my spending on food/meals etc...

I eat mainly fish - try to eat a variety (without breadcrumbs etc) mainly - tuna steak, lemon sole, mackeral, cod, whiting, plaice, salmon

I have fish every day normally with veg (steamed) or salad.

But I (for only 1) seem to spend a fortune !!!

My supermarket bill this week was £62.

Mainly on the fish  (Circa 40 on the fish and 20 on the veg .. don't eat pototoes, bread etc just fish and veg)

I don't want to eat less heathily but I need to cut my food bills down.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

xx

Do you have markets or a fishmonger available to you? We can buy fish locally from a market and it is better value. Also, not sure what fish you are buying but make sure to source lower cost alternatives such as mackerel or coley. If you can get to a fishmonger ask them for cheaper alternatives and what they have cheaper today.

For veg we get an organic box every week for £7 (does 2 people and leftovers at the end of the week for soup). Make sure to research if there is a scheme available to you - plus it is delivered right to your door so less shopping time!

Don't know about fish as I don't eat it being a vegetarian, but for fruit and veg I would go for a veggie box. Cheaper than the £20 per week you are spending (what on earth are you buying for one to spend that much a week on veg??) Let me know what area you are from and maybe someone can suggest a box scheme for you.

  • Hello Littlektten, Echoing OP really re markets etc, also how about tins? I'm on a budget, the pound shop had some tins of salmon for £1 each. Also tins of tuna - the ones in oil (yip I know the calories etc) but; they always taste much better - just drain them. I don't know where you live but the next suggestion is a drive down to the seaside with a cooler box and stock up? Ask around we used to have a fish man who would deliver (to local pubs etc) but he seems to have vanished; hope you are luckier. Lemon solve v expensive - Aldi have some 'Atlantic' sole which is yummy.

Try going to the supermarket on Tuesday/Wednesday evening, I often find that the fish is on offer as it is near its sell by date, but you can always freeze it a soon as you are home.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • Hi Everyone,

    Thanks for all the ideas

A box scheme sounds a goods idea .... I tried Abel & Cole but they don't deliver in my area. (near Chesham, Bucks) and looked at a few others but haven't found anyone to deliver.

Will try the sole from Aldi and late night shoping for the fish ... unfortunately I don't really live near enough to the seaside go down. But if I am ever near the sea I will try to stock up.

  • Do you live coastal or inland? May be cheaper to buy at the coast and freeze into portion sizes. A veg box sounds ideal for you. Local fishmonger?

I eat a lot of the same food as you.No marvellous savings to be had,but I find buying from a local good quality grocer is often cheaper than my local supermarket and can uy 3 of an item for example rather than a box.I buy fish from sainsburys when there is a half price offer on and freeze, the quality is very good.Sardines from lidl, salmon was recently 75p a tin in sommerfield.Frozen prawns at sainsburys £2 a bag.Tinned tuna never that expensive.

Frozen veg is as healthy as fresh & can workout cheaper £ for lb and less waste as it is usually prepared to cook. Same with frozen fish, you can buy bags of frozen salmon & cod fillets for less than fresh. I find salmon can be the cheapest fish £ for lb too unless you want the organic or non-farmed varieties, tinned is cheaper too.
Do you eat any fruit? Eggs? Cheese? Pulses? Give us an idea of the meals you cook or a typical shopping list & we might be able to do more to help;)

  • Hi,

Yes I eat eggs and cheese ... generally scrambled egg that I'll do in the microwave or an omlette that I'll put some mushrooms or something in.

The cheese I tend to get the mild value chedder, and sometimes grate it onto the fish, cube it into salad or sometimes make cauliflower cheese.

I do make lentil and veg or fish curry usually from scratch, basically onion tomato spices and then whatever I have to hand to dump into it.

I also tend to have porridge with water in the morning :

Here is what I had yesterday :

    Breakfast : Porridge, coffee

Lunch - Scrambled Egg (cooked in a bowl with a kob of butter 3 eggs)

Afternoon about 3 - Salad - Radish, pepper, cucumber, spring onion, mushroom all chopped up with oliver oil and cider vinegar.

Evening - sea bass cooked in over with butter drizelled over it.

Today again I had porridge for breakfast and have salad as above plus 2 tins of sardines for later. If I'm peckish in the evening I'll have a tin of plum tomatoes heated up.

Tuesday - I'm travelling so can expense my lunch so will have the porridge for breakfast, something filling for lunch out (expensed) and probably a tin of veg soup when I get home or salad.

Wednesday - not planned for yet have to go to the shop !!!
