Rear end shunt write off?

hi would really appreciate some help as my son's car was involved in a rear end shunt and it looks as though it has to be written off. I'm a named driver and was stationary at a roundabout when I was crashed into which shunted me a few yards up the road. The back windscreen shattered as the boot came forward and is now buckled and caused the rear seat to twist slightly. I was told I had been hit at 15/20 miles an hour but the damage says more. My son and I ended up in hospital for 7 hours and are now home. I'm devestated and so stressed by all of this and the fact that his pride and joy is no more. The car is 16years old and was reliable he had spent money on new timing belt, tyres etc and is now left with an empty space.
I'm so upset by all of this. What happens next. I've contacted relevant insurers etc and he'll get a courtesy car but to be honest neither of us want to drive

You can deal direct with the third party's insurance company as long as he informs his own insurance company and tells them it is for Information Only. It is easier and less hassle to do it this way.

He is quite within his rights to refuse the courtesy car if he doesnt want to drive yet.

Wait to see what is offered by the third party insurance company, always refuse the first offer.

If either of you have sustained injury, and sometimes these dont become evident for a few days, you will have to involve a claims management company. He will be inundated with telephone calls offering this service because names/accidents are passed on by all and sundry
    Hope youre both okay.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Thank you. My son's insurers have arranged a courtesy car and to give peace of mind he has agreed to 'insure it' for 60.00 against any damage as there is a 500 excess if not and its worth peace of mind. I know it seems silly about the car but it really does feel like a bereavement. My son is only 20 and was paying stupid amount every month insurance plus initial deposit on insurance and is now left carless and penniless due to somebody's incompetence. Do you think the car is salvageable but then again it would never feel the same and as the car is only worth whatever no insurer will pay for it to be repaired will they?
  • A 16 year old car will not be repaired. However you can buy it back from the insurers once it's written off and get it repaired yourself. I think there is paperwork involved (possible inspection?) put I'm not sure. But it will forever be considered a insurance write-off and make insuring it more difficult and harder to sell (although at 16 years I guess your not going to sell it).

  • :( he was paying over 300 a month so I guess having it repaired won't be an option just upset how dismissive the other driver and police were and now just when things seemed to pick up Wham. I know it could have been a lot worse but when your child is hurting physically and the reality of the real world deals its hand its horrid. The other car just got a cracked number plate and his car  ?????? He saved hard for the car and has just started a new job so really needs it - hes still on his 3 month probation period too and hes now on sick :(_pale_

Do I try and add him to my policy to my equally old corsa and how much would that be roughly?

If your son claims from his own policy for a write off, the Insurers will deduct the remaining instalments from how much they pay him.

If you claim directly from the other Insurers, this will not happen
