Painting exterior wood

I need to repaint an exterior wooden post. I think it has a coat of gloss on at the moment that has chipped away in afew small areas exposing small areas of wood. I have been reading about the best way to repaint it.
I assume gloss paint will be the best and most hardwearing. From what i have read i should sand down the existing gloss and apply undercoat to the small areas of exposed wood. Then i apply a new coat of gloss paint to the wood.
Would people recommend a roller or brush for the best result? will one coat be enough? or am i best applying two. Sorry if these are obvious questions but i have never done this before and want to getthe bestresult. Thanks for any advice.

Scrape away any flaking paint, lightly sand. Treat bare wood with wood primer. Undercoat and use good quality gloss. Use a brush.1

or use bedec multi surface paint , you won't need a primer or undercoat - one tin does the lot , and it's much better than undercoat and gloss , won't flake peel or blister0
