Advance means that you MUST travel on the particular train time and in the seat that you have a reservation for (and produce both ticket and reservation on demand). And 1st, as terrence-man says, means first class.
As well as probably getting free food and drink on the train, check out whether Liverpool has a first class lounge in which you can wait for your train to arrive.0 -

First Class lounge between platforms 7 and 8 at Liverpool Lime Street.
Worth getting there a bit early then and give yourself a chance to grab a free coffee, nibbles and newspaper in the lounge (although if travelling at a weekend, check the opening times - I know the Stoke one doesn't open until midday on Sundays)0 -
'Im not a regular train traveler and haven't heard of a lounge beofre. I'm going 1st class from Euston with virgin. Does Euston have a 1st class lounge? Where do I find out these things? TIA.0

Yes, it does - details here

As a general tip with Virgin; when looking for advance tickets always include 1st Class in the search, because it can often be cheaper than Standard.
I've just picked Tuesday June the 12th at random; on the 09:17 from Preston to Euston, an advance standard is £65.50 but an advance 1st is £50.50!!
(That service (arrives Euston 12:32) is a good one to look out for if time isn't of the essence; it goes via Birmingham so takes longer, but if you're sitting in comfort with food and drink being provided that really doesn't matter. There's an equivalent return service as well)Long-haul Supporters DFW 120
