New Kitten - Jabs?

Hi everyone

Me and my partner are collecting our new kitten in a few weeks and we have already got him a few bits and bobs ready for when he arrives but we were just wondering which jabs he needs and when? Also when he can be neutured and microchipped and also how much this will all approximately cost?

I've had cats all my life but never had a kitten and my parents dealt with all of the jabs etc so I feel a bit nervous incase he ends up not having what he needs.

We will be making him an appointment at the vets as soon as we get him but we were just wondering how much we needed to try and put aside in the meantime.

Also can anyone recommend a good insurer that will provide life cover and when would be a good time to insure him? Before or after we collect him?

Kittens need two sets of vaccinations: one at 9 weeks and one at 12 weeks. They then need annual boosters (one per year).

He can be neutered from around 5 - 6 months, your vet will know when he's ready.

Costs can vary wildly across the country - when I got my boy neutered and microchipped last October it cost just over £30, but my vet is very reasonably priced, a lot will charge more than this.

Mine are insured with PetPlan which is one of the best in my opinion, though also one of the most expensive. But less likely to pull out of the market as other insurers have done, and also have an excellent reputation.

Most insurers have a 14 day exclusion period at the start, so you may wish to take out the cover a couple of weeks before you pick him up.

Pets at home have a good deal on, you pay for the injections and get the microchip free. The prices was also the cheapest I could find in my area. I think but am not quite sure it was around £60.

I have recently come across Easypet Care http://www.easipetcare.com/home This chain of Vets have places throughout the country. They have very low veterinary service costs. For instance £15 for basic initial course of kitten jabs, (cat flu and cat enteritis) £11.25 for annual booster and £20 if you want to include cat leukaemia for the initial course.and £15 for annual booster. Also, £39.99 to inoculate for life.

They offer £10 to microchip.

I've just rang the vets about our newly acquired kittens and they advised we wait till we've had them a week before getting them vaccinated.
