Article written about you - how to receive a copy

Firstly I am sorry if this is in the wrong place - I wasn't 100% where it would go but I am looking for some advice.

Long story short, when I was young an incident happened upon returning from a holiday in Cyprus and the press were alerted. The big newspaper in Scotland and a few women's magazines interviewed my mother and myself and were published.

I am trying to find out how I can obtain copies of these stories. I cannot quite recall the year, but I think I was about 12ish as I was not long in high school when it happened. So I think it was about 1992-1993.
I know the names of the newspaper and magazine that wrote about us, but I don't know how I can go about obtaining copies of these stories.

Approaching my mother about this is off the cards, we have a very poor relationship and I feel she would hinder rather than help me in this!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

First point of contact would be the newspaper/magazines concerned, if they are well established, they will have the stories on file and should be able to supply a copy.

When you say the 'big newspaper' in Scotland, which one? as some are actually owned by other news companies.

You aren't enrolled with the OU are you? If so you could try accessing the newspaper databases that you can get to via their library. Alternatively, if you know the names of the publications, you could write to them.

I'd google some key words that were specific to the article. I found a 1960's public notice this way, and found out my husband's mum changed her name by deed poll after his birth before getting married to the father 4 years later - how avant garde was that for the early 60's??
  • It was the Daily Record that covered the story in the press up here. I have thought about emailing them and the woman's magazines involved but I didn't know if I would have a right to access those stories.

Sadly I am not enrolled in the OU, that would have been pretty handy!

I would simply ring the publications and ask -Theyll have past issues archieved and will be able to print them out for you-Might be a small charge at most.

Ask around you're bound to know someone who belongs to the OU (or whose partner sister etc does)

I might be able to access it for you if you can PM me the details?

The Record is part of the Mirror group so they should still have the story in their library, an email or phone call to their Glasgow office should get the ball rolling.
  • I was thinking of contacting them but because my information is so vague I don't know if they would give me the time of day! I will look up their contacts now and see what I can do.

Thanks again for all the advice!
