Auto Direct and asking a question

Last night someone has bumped our car and left a large scratch mark on it on the rear bumper and drove off.
To have it repaired may cost over £400, plus we need a new fog light as they have smashed that too.,

I want to ring the car insurance company which is Auto-Direct but my husband says if you ring and ask if we have an excess to pay, they still log it as a claim even if you don't go through with it.
Does anybody know if that is true.
The paperwork we have is internet based and doesn't say how much the excess is and we can't remember from when taking the policy out.

Your husband is right. Even if you don't proceed to claim you potentially face increased premiums . If you claim, you also stand to lose your excess and 2 years on NCD.

They will sting you for far more than the £400 over many years, repair it out of your pocket.
Until you can find the culprit and establish an "incident" occurred there is not one to report.....

They wont log it as a claim but they will log it as an incident / accident.

    Thanks everybody for your replies.
I can't believe just asking a general question would cause so much hassle.
Oh well, time to save up again.
