Dialling the UK from abroad - calling cards

Sorry, this doesn't fit neatly into any of the phone forum categories ...

For the last x years I have used the OneTel Home and Away calling card to call home from abroad. They provided a toll free number in each country where I then gave a logon and password and dialled the UK number. Any call charges were deducted from my bank account afterwards by direct debit.

Although I probably only made up to 6 calls a year this way, I found it very useful, particularly by being billed after the event for only the calls I made. Rather than having to top up in advance.

OneTel have recently withdrawn this service, something I'm really disappointed about - does anyone know of a similar service offered by any other company ?

There are quite a few to look at on these two sites

You'd want to avoid ones with daily or weekly maintenance fees, and there are other details to get confused by like different billing units, some with higher connection fees from phoneboxes, others barred from some mobiles and callboxes, etc

You might also look into callback services
