Hi all, its a shame things have got like this, a few years ago we used to attend a well known county show and used to rely on the lovely food the ladies from the WI used to make and supply in the food tents, pies, pasties, cakes, jams all homemade and cheaper than the private caterers at these events. They were wrapped nicely with the name of the person who made it on them, then the new regulations came in so it stopped, obviously it wasnt worth having kitchen inspections etc for just a few events a year.:(

Thanks everyone so much for the help and advice. I'm going to make my cakes and print out the recipe so if anyone asks the ingredients are listed. So if there is a news item about a dozen people rushed to hospital in Middlesbrough on 2 June you know who made the cakes!!!!

It costs nothing to have your kitchen inspected by environmental health
they are there to help people and if things are not up to a certain standard they advise you
really don't see what the issue is even if you only do a few events a year

the ironic thing is that they are far more likely to be killed or maimed in a rta on their way to the concert than from any harm from your cakes

i can't see what the problem would be , let's face it all village fetes ,schools, w i events etc etc have a cake stalls made by local residents , they can't all have been inspected and they don't have any trouble , i would just get on with it , anyone would be grateful that someone has gone to the trouble of baking stuff .

WI do get their kitchens inspected, and have the name of the maker on their goods

Anyone with a known nut allergy would be cautious enough not to trust unknown sources anyway, their lives may depend on it so they woudln't be eating random stuff

Anyways OP, dont worry about it - if we believe the news, folk are far more likely to be dropping like flies from legionella in the compost on the plant stall!

Enjoy your event in the spirit it is intended! :T

Just remember if you make someone ill, expect a no win no fee solicitor sue you for all you have.
Ok so this is unlikely, but it is what can happen by giving strangers nice treats without the liability insurance and all the regulations you need for it.

Apart from anything else, I should think you need to get it OKed by the organisers of the event. Giving away stuff free at an event, presumeably, organised to raise money for a charity might negatively affects the money-raising efforts of others hoping to make money for the charity.

People would really appreciate your cupcakes. And your kitchen is clean right? So you won't face any problems then.

My kitchens filthy and I never get sick. This clean thing is over-rated.

Why is there so much confusion re cooking/baking goods at home and selling/giving them away. As for 'one off' events like school fair, or jubilee party, you only need one mouthful of 'bad' food to get food poisoning. Seems like 'jobs for the boys'.
